Preserving HP

  • The point of preserving HP is that the more HP you have in the mid to late game, the more effect you can have on the outcome of a match. If you give up most of your HP at the start, you have to ‘play it safe’, or die, and then depend on your muppets, er. I mean teammates, to come through with the win on your behalf
  • In competitive gameplay, losing HP early puts strain on the team as they are now missing a key component of the team to pull the win off – YOU. Crashing off rocks and hills, drowning in shallow water, driving into (or leaving your side open to) devastating enemy fire, etc. are all examples of what NOT to do

  • Camo / View Range > Exposure > Armor > First Strike > HP
  • Definitions:
    • Detected: When people can infer your location without directly spotting you (knocking over objects, trees, or shooting)
    • Acquired: Actually being spotted by the enemy

  • 1. Engage the enemy from a position of concealment, or outside spotting range (>445m)
    • You will share experience for damage dealt with whomever is spotting for you, but not be acquired
    • Make every attempt to engage the enemy first through means of un-returnable damage
    • You are looking to create a HP advantage for your team which in return will help to improve your winrate
  • 2. When you can no longer do #1, expose your tank in order to continue the fight
    • Limit your exposure, create the smallest, hardest to hit profile you can, only peeking out from cover the bare minimum
    • Use your armor if you have any to use
    • If you can’t limit exposure, or use armor effectively – make sure to get the first strike in, and have or keep the HP advantage if possible
  • 3. Read the map carefully, pull back (or rush out) in order to engage the enemy in a more favorable condition
    • Make an attempt to surprise the enemy through concealment and view range, giving you the first shot advantage
  • 4. Your last resort is to trade HP for damage. If you can choose your targets, try to isolate and trade your HP with the lowest HP target available
  • 5. Opportunities for un-returnable fire are everywhere:
    • Use your teammates’ HP to your advantage when they make poor plays. It presents you with un-returnable fire opportunities – even though you’re spotted and likely presenting a target, they’re engaged with your teammate that made the poor decision
    • When your opponent is on a reload is another opportunity for un-returnable fire
  • 6. Sometimes you have to sacrifice your HP for the good of the team, in order to give them the best case win scenario. Try to make this in the mid to late game when it matters, and not at the beginning of the match, where it’s for no reason and was unnecessary.
  • If you put into practice everything we’ve discussed so far, it all culminates in this:
    • Knowing what’s going on around you, cover and concealment in your area, terrain you can use to your advantage
    • Using spotting to your advantage, and concealment to hide yourself as much as possible
    • Knowing which ammo to use, and when
    • Knowing how to penetrate and deal damage to enemy tanks in the most effective manner, and how to use your armor effectively to keep them from doing it to you
    • Reading the map and the game as it develops, where you should be, when and what you should be doing to press your team’s advantages and shore up gaps as they occur
    • And putting that whole picture together in order to dish as much damage as you can, where needed, while minimizing your exposure and preserving the HP of your vehicle so that you can be effective in the mid to late game – WHEN IT MATTERS – to push the win for your team

REMEMBER:

  • Hitpoints are currency, YOU should choose when to spend them, not let the enemy choose for you
  • YOU should be making the decision of trading them for position, win, etc.
  • Get to the point of spending them on YOUR terms
